All Martin College campuses offer a dedicated work placement assistance service which aims to help students find a range of exciting employment opportunities.
In addition to graduate jobs and regular part-time work, a key element of this service involves providing assistance to those interested in finding short-term opportunities.
Sydney, for example, regularly plays host to major international events such as the 4th International Aids Society (IAS) Conference which took place on 22-25 July 2007. Participating in events like this gives students a unique chance to enhance their resume, support a particular cause or discover more about an area of interest.
These events also present a prime opportunity for international students to improve their English language skills and use their native language skills to their advantage. In this case, the IAS needed willing volunteers able to speak English and another European language to act as hosts to visitors from around the world.
Katrin Seeger (pictured above), who is from Germany and is studying an Advanced Diploma of Business Management, took the chance to use her German language skills and help out at the IAS.
“My responsibility was to make the clients and their guests feel comfortable by serving and interacting in English and German,” recalls Katrin. “I had to greet people and collect the conference session questionnaire cards from the audience.”
“I not only was able to have a look behind the scenes of an event, I also made some friends from all over the world,” she said.
“I would recommend that everyone do work experience because it is not only a great possibility to have a look behind the scenes it is also a great way to gain knowledge and experience towards your future career.”
